{"id":4649,"date":"2022-01-19T20:47:39","date_gmt":"2022-01-19T20:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phoenixmicrdev.wpengine.com\/?p=4649"},"modified":"2026-04-02T17:50:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T17:50:41","slug":"deep-learning-provides-unbiased-evaluation-of-uveitis-severity-levels-in-1500-phoenix-micron-mouse-fundus-images","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phoenixmicron.com\/es\/deep-learning-provides-unbiased-evaluation-of-uveitis-severity-levels-in-1500-phoenix-micron-mouse-fundus-images\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep learning provides unbiased evaluation of uveitis severity levels in 1500 Phoenix MICRON\u00ae mouse fundus images"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2020, researchers Jian Sun, Xiaoqin Huang et al, in the Laboratory of Immunology at the National Eye Institute, confirmed in the lab what has been going on in human ophthalmology in recent years, but with a twist.\u00a0 Their deep learning model enabled identification of retinal disease stages with noteworthy accuracy.\u00a0 What marked their work as distinct is they were the first to successfully apply artificial intelligence to a dataset of 1500 <a href=\"https:\/\/phoenixmicron.com\/phoenix-micron\/micron-iv\/\">Phoenix\u00a0MICRON\u00ae<\/a>\u00a0retinal images of a mouse model of uveitis.\u00a0 Their findings hold exciting promise for developing tools for both experimental models as well as for clinical practice.<\/p>\n<p>Uveitis describes a set of conditions characterized by intraocular inflammation.\u00a0 It is believed to account for 10% of legal blindness in the USA. \u00a0Clinical assessment is challenging and complicated therefore evaluation of retinal change is prone to inter and intra-observer variability. \u00a0Accurate detection is key to tailoring appropriate medical treatments that carry risks of significant adverse ocular and systemic side effects.<\/p>\n<p>In clinical practice, artificial intelligence (AI) identification of retinal disease has been successfully used in diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and retinopathy of prematurity with accuracy comparable to that of experienced ophthalmologists.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits include 1) consistency between intra and inter observer analysis, 2) learning accuracy of the algorithm and 3) cost-effectiveness compared with extensive training of human experts.\u00a0 While this describes the findings in the medical community, it also holds true in the world of animal research.<\/p>\n<p>Experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) is often used as the animal model for uveitis as it shares essential features with the human form. \u00a0EAU is a challenging disease to successfully and reproducibly classify both clinically and experimentally.\u00a0 Sun and colleagues applied their convolutional neural network (CNN) model to the identification of 3 classes of disease severity (normal, trace and disease) in EAU with comparable, if not slightly better precision than human graders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4650\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4650\" style=\"width: 1540px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4650 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/phoenixmicron.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/i2164-2591-9-2-59-f2_1606817861.72033.png\" alt=\"sample of the 1500 mouse fundus images used for research\" width=\"1540\" height=\"850\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/phoenixmicron.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/i2164-2591-9-2-59-f2_1606817861.72033.png 1540w, https:\/\/phoenixmicron.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/i2164-2591-9-2-59-f2_1606817861.72033-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/phoenixmicron.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/i2164-2591-9-2-59-f2_1606817861.72033-1024x565.png 1024w, https:\/\/phoenixmicron.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/i2164-2591-9-2-59-f2_1606817861.72033-768x424.png 768w, https:\/\/phoenixmicron.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/i2164-2591-9-2-59-f2_1606817861.72033-1536x848.png 1536w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1540px) 100vw, 1540px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1540px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1540\/850;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2. White arrow, optic disc edema; black arrow, vasculitis; yellow arrow, retina folds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In their paper \u201c<em>Identifying Mouse Autoimmune Uveitis from Fundus\u00a0<\/em><em>Photographs Using Deep Learning\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0authors suggest that although there is more work to do, the application of deep learning to experimental animal research to extract features from images can lead to standardization in the interpretation of results across different laboratories, with the potential for more accurate comparisons and collaborations.
